Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is Clear Wire?
Clear Wire is a translucent orthodontic wire. Like any other wire it applies force to effect tooth movement. However, unlike traditional arch wires, which are made of metal alloys, the Clear Wire is made of materials that are translucent in appearance. Therefore, it effectively blends naturally with your tooth enamel resulting in completely aesthetic appearance when worn with aesthetic brackets.

Q2: How does Clear Wire perform to other orthodontic treatment methods?
Because Clear Wire is based upon braces technology (i.e. fixed appliances), the gold standard in orthodontic treatment methods, the duration of treatment is less than other aesthetic alternatives such as clear aligners. Click here to see supporting evidence of the wire moving teeth.

Q3: Where do I go to receive treatment using the Clear Wire with aesthetic brackets?
The Clear Wire is offered by many specialty dental professionals called orthodontists and some general dentists. If your dental practitioner is unfamiliar with the Clear Wire you may need to inform him or her of the name of your local distributor. Click here for a complete listing.

Q4: Will Clear Wire work for me?
Clear Wire can be used for many patient cases with mild to moderate crooked teeth. You will need to consult with your doctor whom will decide how best to apply the Clear Wire to your orthodontic treatment regime. Not all doctors may be familiar with the Clear Wire, therefore, you may need to provide him with the names of the Clear Wire website and your local orthodontic supply distributor.

Q5: How much does treatment cost with Clear Wire and aesthetic brackets?
The cost of treatment to the patient is largely determined by the doctor. Therefore, some doctors may charge a premium to the patient, while others may absorb the additional cost of the Clear Wire and aesthetic brackets. If your insurance provides coverage for orthodontic treatment reimbursement will also be provided for Clear Wire.

Q6: Is the Clear Wire FDA approved?
Absolutely. The FDA approved the sale of the Clear Wire in May 2008. Approval in international markets may vary, but as of today it is approved for sale in Europe, Canada, Taiwan, Korea, South Africa, etc. The Clear Wire is available for sale in the following countries and regions including the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Singapore. Be sure to check this website frequently for an update to its availability. Speak also to your dental practitioner.

Q7: How do I care for my Clear Wire and aesthetic brackets?
Like any other orthodontic treatment method, special attention is necessary to prevent appliance breakage. Hard and sticky food should be avoided when wearing your appliances. If you must consume it, make sure to cut the food in small bite size morsels. This reduces the forces applied to your braces. Click here to download the patient care document.

Q8: Does the Clear Wire remain translucent during treatment?
The Clear Wire is highly resistant to staining from foods and liquids. Click here to see supporting evidence. However, due to the translucent nature of the Clear Wire and the braces, extra cleaning is required by the patient. Otherwise, the aesthetics will diminish due to the accumulation of food particulate and plaque. Therefore, good oral hygiene is essential to maintain the aesthetics and prevent tooth and gum disease.

Q9: What should I do when a region of whitening appears on the Clear Wire surface?
The white region means a crack has formed within the wire. However, force is still being applied to effect tooth movement. To avoid further whitening or the occurrence of fracture abstain from applying excess forces to the wire within that region. This means abstaining from the consumption of hard and sticky food. Brush and floss gently around the afflicted area until your next appointment with your doctor. Click here to download the patient care document.

Q10: What happens after being treated with Clear Wire and aesthetic braces?
To retain teeth in their ideal position after active orthodontic treatment a retention appliance is often prescribed. The most common retention appliance is the acrylic retainer (soldered Hawley, wrap -around, etc.). An aesthetic alternative to the acrylic retainer is now available with the advent of the ASTICS® Retainer, which is based upon the Clear Wire.
